OCTOBER 25, 2022 — October in the Finger Lakes region might be all about the orange, reds and yellows of the changing leaves. But in Lyons this year, a group of athletes and their supporters are thinking pink.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, recognized nationally every October, the Lyons Sodus Varsity Football team, the Lyons Varsity Cheerleading squad, and the Lyons Sodus Football Booster Club together raised $1,065 for the Rochester Regional Health Mobile Mammography Center.

“On Monday, Coach Steve said he wanted to do something for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Senior Night. I was like, ‘okay, let’s do this,’” said Lyons parent and Booster Club Treasurer Myranda Webb.

In the days leading up to the October 14 Senior Night football game against the Waterloo Tigers, the Boosters jumped into action to put together gift baskets to raffle off. Baskets were donated by local businesses, including Lyons National Bank and Dobbins Drugs. Other raffle baskets came from Dorothy Barnes, LCSD teacher and coach Colleen Boardman, Lyons Sodus Booster Club President Toshia Sirmons, Booster Treasurers Myranda Webb and Elizabeth Dapolito, and a final basket was put together by parents of the Lyons Varsity Cheerleaders.

Proceeds from raffling off the baskets, an additional 50/50 raffle, and the concession stand were added together to benefit the Mobile Mammography Center. Lyons Elementary School even joined in on the fundraising efforts, contributing $65 to the cause. “Zac (Young) just showed up at the game with $65 to add and said it was from staff donations at the elementary school,” said Ms. Webb.

“It was great to see the entire community come together for such an important cause,” said LCSD Athletic Director Zac Young. “The Mobile Mammography Center is well-known in our region and we wanted to celebrate Senior Night by giving back.”

The Rochester Regional Health Mobile Mammography Center provides comfortable and accessible breast cancer screenings throughout the region. Patients both with and without insurance can visit the Center and receive state-of-the-art screenings.

As Senior Night came to a close, spirits soared as Lyons Sodus – many of the players and their fans dressed in pink – took the win over Waterloo, with a final score of 34 to 8.

The following Monday, the Mobile Mammography Center visited Lyons MS/HS to receive their donation and take a photo with the student athletes who made the first-year fundraiser a success.

Ms. Webb is already looking forward to next year. “I'm hoping we can get it to grow bigger and better.”
