Monochromatic Self-Portraits

Students in Mrs. Brooks’ 9th grade Studio Art class are working on monochromatic portraits this month.

The acrylic paintings on recycled cardboard began with photos taken by Mrs. Brooks that students then altered in Adobe Photoshop to “posterize” them — essentially reducing the number of tones in the image to create a more artistic rendering of the photo. This also allows students to assign a specific color to each section and paint as they go.

“I’m really impressed with the students in this class. They’re working hard on these projects,” Mrs. Brooks said. “It’s been great to see them learn that although this looks complicated, it’s a really simple way to create a stunning self-portrait.”
