Lyons, July 22, 2024 - The 31st annual Curtain Call program kicked off this summer at Lyons High School, bringing together 140 talented students from eight school districts for a celebration of performing arts education.
The program, known for its commitment to fostering a creative space for students to explore and develop their skills in theater, music, and dance, opened its doors on July 1st and will run through July 25th. Students in grades 3-12 have participated in small group workshops, rehearsals, and performances guided by experienced instructors and industry professionals.
For over three decades, the Curtain Call program has enhanced participants' artistic skills and instilled values of teamwork, discipline, leadership, and self-confidence. For many students, it has been a significant point in their artistic journeys, equipping them with skills and experiences that extend beyond the stage and into neighboring districts.
"I have spent a majority of my life at this camp - the atmosphere, the campers, the staff, they all share their love for music and a common idea that music and the performing arts truly can change lives. This program helped to shape me into the performer and teacher that I am today. Being able to come back to Lyons and share my passion with the students has been the highlight of my life," said Lyons High School music teacher, Michaela Schaffer, who's participated in Curtain Call for 17 years and currently serves as one of the lead instructors.
In 1993, Jean Stoep and the retired Lyons music teacher, Mark Wlodarczyk, established the program in Lyons with only 11 students. Since then, the program has expanded into surrounding communities, leaving a lasting impression on participants. Across generations, families have continued to engage with the program, with many alumni achieving success in professional theater, as music teachers, industry leaders, and more. Wlodarczyk continues to lead the program with his talented team of Curtain Call alumni, showcasing their passion for helping students harness the power of performing arts.
“This program has been a success due largely to the overwhelming support of the Lyons Central School District, the cooperation of other area school districts, and Wayne - Finger Lakes BOCES. What makes our program so unique is the continuity of instruction. So many staff members are former Curtain Callers, and go on to careers in teaching or performing arts-related careers,” said Wlodarczyk.
As the program enters its final week, anticipation is building for the grand finale performances, which promise to dazzle audiences with a showcase of talent, creativity, and dedication. The students' hard work will be presented in a series of performances in the Earl Buchanan Auditorium at Lyons High School on July 24th and 25th at 7:00 PM.
