Dear Lyons Community, Students, and Staff,

As we wrap up the first few weeks of the school year, I want to take a moment to acknowledge both the challenges and the successes we have recently experienced. In the face of adversity—statewide threats and a tragedy close to home—what truly endures is the strength, unity, and resilience of this incredible community.

When Lyons is tested, we do what we always do—we come together. Our resilience, compassion, and commitment to one another define who we are. And despite any challenges, we are unwavering in our focus on moving forward, building a better future for our community.

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved already this year. There is a renewed sense of excitement in our schools—students eager to learn, teachers passionate about their work, and support staff ensuring that everything runs smoothly. From our bus drivers and cafeteria workers to custodians and classroom aides, every single person has played a vital role in creating a successful start to the year.

That’s what makes Lyons special. We don’t just talk about community; we live it every day. We are united by a shared commitment: a belief that, together, we will accomplish great things.

Throughout the start of this year, I have been reminded of my favorite Theodore Roosevelt quote:

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles... The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena… who strives valiantly; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause."

We are the ones in the arena—facing challenges head-on, working tirelessly to improve our schools, our community, and our future. It is easy to criticize from the sidelines, but true leaders have the courage to step up and make a difference.

As we move forward, our commitment to improvement continues. We will Lead Like Lions, focusing forward and embracing that each setback is an opportunity to grow stronger. The Roar will Continue— and I cannot wait to see all that we will achieve together.

Sincerely,

Matthew Barr, Ed. D.
