Lyons, NY—Lyons Central School District is proud to celebrate a historic milestone achieved by 2023 Lyons graduate Emery Taylor. Taylor made history as the youngest person ever admitted into the University at Buffalo’s School of Law through its prestigious 3+3 Accelerated BA/JD combined degree program, offered by UB's School of Law and College of Arts and Sciences.
Taylor, currently an undergraduate at UB, will begin law school this fall at just 19 years old, after accelerating both her high school and college education. Her drive, intellect, and passion for justice have fueled a remarkable journey that started in the halls of Lyons High School and is now making waves statewide.
“It’s the coolest thing ever. I’m so excited,” Taylor shared. “Graduating early from Lyons allowed me to follow this fast-track path, and I’ve met so many amazing people along the way who have encouraged and supported me.”
Taylor’s path began with an early realization of her academic potential during ninth grade, leading her to participate in the Early Scholar Program at Finger Lakes Community College and complete additional coursework during the summer with support from Lyons teacher Rodney Hartwell. Initially majoring in Spanish—an influence from her beloved Spanish teacher, Lauren Maddock—Taylor’s path came full circle when she realized her true calling in legal advocacy. After switching majors and completing rigorous coursework, Taylor decided to take the LSAT before securing her admission into the UB School of Law.
“I’ve always been interested in politics and advocacy work,” Taylor explained. “I remember our fifth-grade mock election in Mrs. Briana Clark’s class—it sparked something in me. Since then, I’ve loved staying informed, volunteering, and finding ways to make a difference in people’s lives.”
At UB, Taylor has immersed herself in experiences that underscore her passion for justice, including volunteering at a domestic violence shelter, working alongside women’s advocacy groups in Albany, participating in reentry programs for formerly incarcerated individuals, and interning with experts in the judicial field. These experiences have sharpened her vision for a future in law, particularly in advocacy, criminal, family, and civil law.
Throughout her journey, Taylor has drawn strength from her family, friends, and impactful educators like Mr. Tim Carr, who encouraged her to embrace the power of her own voice. “It was evident that Emery had a heightened awareness of the complex times we find ourselves in. Emery’s civic engagement, passion, and curiosity are skills History teachers love to see students deploy within their school and beyond. I am certain she will positively impact the various civic or educational communities she decides to engage with,” Mr. Carr stated.
“Coming from a small town like Lyons gave me opportunities to build strong connections and stand out. I still carry those roots with me,” Taylor said. “I want to serve underrepresented communities, give a voice to people who are overlooked, and show other young women in law that not only can you do it, but you can do it your way.”
“Emery is an individual who is not only talented but driven. We are proud of the accomplishments she has made, and also excited for what the future holds,” said Superintendent Dr. Barr.
The Lyons Central School District is proud of Emery Taylor’s remarkable achievements and the impactful, justice-oriented future she is shaping. We look forward to watching her continue to make history and inspire countless others along her journey.
